The University of Manitoba Clay Club is pleased to present visiting artist Allison McGowan On Thurs Feb 22 and Fri Feb 23 at the U of M Ceramics Building. Allison McGowan has a MFA from Alfred University, and specializes in functional, handbuilt porcelain.She will be demonstrating on Feb 22 and 23 from 10 - 4, and giving a slide lecture on Feb 22 at 7, following a potluck supper.Everyone is welcome - no fee for attendance. The Works is currently inviting proposals for the 23rd annual Works Art and Design Festival in 2008. The categories for proposals include commissioned curators of group exhibits, commissioned site specific installation, community events or exhibits, and individual or two person exhibits. The Works Art & Design Festival was founded in 1986 to promote the awareness and appreciation of art and design. Now the largest event of its kind in North America, the Works features over 30 exhibits and 200 special events annually. The heart of the festival is Sir Winston Churchill Square where our annual audience of over 250 000 people can enjoy live music, sample food from around the world, purchase original art in the art market, or learn art-making techniques from experienced art educators. Global Community Art Project on War-Affected Children

Wanted 900 Artists, Non-artists, Eager Participants etc.
In 1996 I completed footnote, an installation of 1001 hand-built, child-sized ceramic shoes. The shoes were unglazed, smoke-blackened, and altered to suggest some of the ways in which children affected by war have suffered. Based on 1995 UNICEF statistics, each shoe represented 6000 children affected by war in the previous 10 years. footnote was designed to be a visual illustration of numbers and facts that are difficult to comprehend intellectually (for more on footnote see accompanying photo and/or click on Aceart).footnote was exhibited in Winnipeg in 1996 and in Toronto in 1997 and the shoes then stored away. However, in the present world climate of war, my thoughts have turned to questions of what war-affected children might need in order to begin to heal. Rather than make this a solitary project, I would like to invite your participation. If you are interested, I will send you a shoe (or shoes, for there are many) for you to make, using your own materials, something to hold, cover, or contain it that would symbolize an alleviation of the loss and damage. The shoe and your contribution would then be sent back to us, after which the work will be exhibited and offered for sale by donation. The proceeds will go to projects for children affected by war. I have more than 900 shoes to distribute, and would like to involve as many people, from as many geographical locations, as possible. If you know of others who might be interested in participating, please forward this email to them. If you are able to print out the attached poster to put up in likely places, we would greatly appreciate it. Winnipeg Folk Festival – Call for craftspeople
We will be running 2 craft sales this spring, Saturday April 14 and Saturday May 12.Please contact us if you are interested in participating. Remember to include:

Sales will take place in the “Folk Exchange” 103-211 Bannatyne Ave, 11am-5pm
We will look for a diversity of mediums and artists each week.
The Festival provides tables and chairs.
Table size is 2.5’x5’ (two 30” square tables put together)
There is some room for additional fixtures (shelves etc)
Set up will be from 9-11am
Vendor or representative must stay at or near their tables during open hoursSales Process
There is no fee to participate, but the Folk Festival Music Store charges a 15% commission on all sales.
Vendors will complete and sign a sales agreement reflecting this prior to sale.
All sales will be processed through the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store sales system, which includes credit card and interac service.
An itemized receipt will be generated for each sale, copies will be provided for vendor records.
Vendors will be issued a sales report at the end of the day showing all sales of their product.
Cheques will be issued the following week.
Folk Festival Music Store and Winnipeg Folk Festival not responsible for stolen items. We will be promoting these sales on our website, email lists, postering, and press releases.

WHO
All entrants must be permanent residents of Manitoba.

WHAT
● All submitted work must be original, and must be inspired by a historical event, person, place, culture, craft technique and/or motif. If possible, a photograph or image of this influence should be included with your entry.
● Entries are open to all craft media. Painting, photographs, commercial kits and graphic arts will not be accepted. Work must be created after January 2005.
● A maximum of two entries per person may be submitted.
● Accepted work must be available for the duration of the exhibition.
● The entrant grants the MCML the right to use digital and slide images for publicity, education and/or exhibition purposes related to this Exhibition


ENTRY FEE
$30 – MCML members
$65 – Non-members
Annual Membership to the MCML is $30 for adults and $20 for students/seniors.
Fee payable by cheque or cash to the “Manitoba Crafts Museum & Library”.
HOW
Complete the ENTRY FORM and include:
● An Artist’s Statement (up to 250 words) outlining the specific historical inspiration for each entry. This information will be displayed beside accepted work. Please include a photograph or image of the source of inspiration.
● Artist’s biography (up to 100 words).
● Two images are required for each work; one full view and one detail. Digital images must be on CD-ROM, 300 dpi resolution, picture size 4x6 and saved as a jpeg file with no modifications to the image. CD-ROM must be labeled with artist’s name, title of work, size and the date of the work. CD-ROMs will not be returned.
● Slides are also acceptable labeled with artist’s name, title of work, year and size. If you wish to have your slides returned to you, include a self-addressed and stamped envelope.
● Accepted works that differ from digital images provided to the jury will be disqualified.

WHEN

● Entry Deadline is July 13, 2007 at 4:00pm. Hand deliveries with identification will be accepted at MCML from 10:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday before July 13. No late entries accepted.

● Acceptance Notification is August 15, 2007. All entrants will be notified of the jury’s decision by phone or e-mail.

● Exhibition Dates are September 27th – November 10th 2007. The exhibition will take place in St. Boniface at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain (CCFM), La Gallerie.

● Exhibition Opening is September 27, 2007 where craftspeople and local dignitaries will be in attendance.

● Juried work will be returned by November 30, 2007. Work must be picked up at the MCML offices, 1B-183 Kennedy St., Winnipeg by this date unless other arrangements are made.
