In Plain View Winnipeg Studio Tours

Well, we had our springtime artist tour here in Winnipeg and by and large it seems to have been well-accepted. Those with studios in areas where there are several close together did better than those in more outlying areas, but it looks promising enough to contemplate doing again. The weather, which at first blush looked lousy, was probably a plus - people didn't stay home to work in their gardens or go to the lake, they trecked around instead.

Speaking of studio tours, the interlake tour, The Wave, will be taking place soon. Here's the word:

6th WAVE Artists’ Studio Tour 2007
June 9 and 10; September 1 and 2; hours: 10 am to 6 pm


We are pleased to announce the up coming WAVE event. This group of artists is committed to arts and culture and they are proud of their co-operative achievement. During the open house artists fulfill two goals 1) to show their works and have an opportunity to sell from their studios, 2) to offer the general public art education by simply showing off the fine art and fine crafts offered on the WAVE Artists Studio Tour.
The majority of artists have been on the WAVE for 5 consecutive years, a sign of being seriously engaged.

New artists come on board each year, while others need to take time out from this hectic professional arts event. Much work is inspired by the lake landscape but the range of subjects is wide such as fibre sculpture made from Angora rabbit wool. The artist raises the rabbits, then cards the wool and sculpts in a method unique to her craft. There is hand made jewellery with glass beads fashioned by the artist. Paintings in different media, acrylic and oils, watercolour, quilted and appliqué landscape. Wood and clay sculpture as well as functional pottery. A cultural heritage site was added to this year’s WAVE tour. The Sanctuary of Grace features an exhibit of the ancient Byzantine tradition of iconography; St. Volodymyr Chapel features its unique architectural structure and existing iconography. New on the tour are different expressions of painting: portraiture, abstract, painted masks. And that’s not all a little west to the hamlet of Fraserwood; a creative person is growing his original designs by using live willows and other vines to do so. The tour even boasts a master luthier. Add to this the artists who are into multi-tasking in a variety of muses: singers, writers and poets together they make the WAVE tour a delightful experience touching the visitors through all senses.

The WAVE Artists Studio Tour brochure is portraying a vibrantly creative artistic community. This brochure will be available mid May, however, the website can already be accessed www.watchthewave.ca in order to get a glimpse of what fabulous art and culture is offered. This enables visitors to make plans for a weekend, perhaps an overnight stay at one of the fine B&Bs or hotels located within the tour circuit.

Focusing on art & culture in the Interlake communities, this self-guided tour invites visitors to speak with artists in their individual, natural working environments.
WINNIPEG BEACH ART + CULTURE Co -op artists recommend to take the scenic route through cottage country along Lake Winnipeg’s western shore, experience the vastness of Netley Creek and Oak Hammock Marshes, Leave the beaten path for charming country lanes and take a trip inland to Stonewall. Cover the whole tour in a round-trip loop, make it a day or a weekend adventure- great restaurants, picnic sites, sandy beaches for a refreshing dip, inspiring historic sites, first class accommodations-, an art experience up close and personal...and perhaps, take home a work of art inspired by the Interlake.
Participating artists will be flying the blue & white WAVE flag.

Just a note: I'm not blogging as frequently, nowadays, partly because I've been busy and partly because Gaetanne Sylvester is doing a good job of sending out art community info. I had hoped that MCC might take in hand the concept of keeping people informed and it looks as though concerns about communication are being addressed by the interim board.

However, I must confess I'm puzzled about one thing: So far the communications that we are getting this way is all about other arts organizations. There has been little about MCC, apart from information about the membership meetings. Are we former members supposed to be more interested in what's happening with Ace Art, MAWA, etc. than with MCC? If so - we're still in trouble.

Questions to the MCC Board - what is happening? Are you meeting? What plans and decisions are being made? How is the money being spent?
